The River2Sea Whopper Plopper Lure And How To Fish It

Spread the love

The River2Sea Whopper Plopper Lure is the hottest top-water lure on the market. It’s easy to fish and attracts bass with a unique sound and water displacement. What’s more, the bait floats, allowing anglers to pause the lure between straight retrieves. It has amazing drawing power. But it’s important to know how to fish it and when. Once dialed in, the River 2 Sea Whopper Plopper will be a go-to lure in your top-water tackle.

Fishing the Right Conditions

Early morning and early evening are the best times to fish a Whopper Plopper in the heat of the summer. Perfect conditions also might include overcast skies, fog, and wind. These conditions all disrupt sunlight, force the bass to rely on sound and vibration, and trigger them to become more aggressive. They’ll hone in on the target with strong water displacement and sound without knowing exactly what it is. Wind also moves nutrients around in the water. As a result, bait fish feed aggressively, and larger predator fish follow suit. This is when bass will take up ambush positions on fallen trees and points where a strong current sweeps around it.

How To Fish A Whopper Plopper Lure

The Whopper Plopper lure works best along banks and close to cover and structure. Anglers often find the best-looking cover on the lake such as laydowns and areas where the bank transitions. By that, I mean dirt that turns to gravel, or bedrock that turns to mud. But keep it shallow. Cast as close to cover as possible from a boat and use a steady retrieve allowing the lure to produce the proper action. Cast at a 45-degree angle along bank transitions and sweep along anything that looks “bassy.” I like fishing grass lines along rocky points at dusk when bass are feeding. A bank that transitions to a drop-off or inclines to a grass flat is a perfect example. But either way, it’s an unbeatable search bait that covers water efficiently.

Whopper Plopper Lure Sizes And Colors

The 90 mm is the standard size anglers will use when bass feed on bait fish. This size contrasts the 130 size which may appear bulkier and less likely to get bit in certain situations. The 90 mm provides a better opportunity for multi-species action including smallmouth bass. For colors, I like throwing more natural colors on high-visibility days. This includes greens, translucent, blue, and shad colors. I’ll switch to bone white as visibility decreases due to cloud color or approaching evening – this is the best time to fish, by far! Darker colors work well when water clarity is dingy.

 Rod Size, Line, And Reel

A 7-7.5′ medium heavy rod with 14-30 lb mono is a decent set-up for the River2sea 90 and 130. Anglers also use braided lines for a better hookset. If you use a braided line, consider using a rod with a soft tip and good parabolic bend to tone down the amount of power in your hookset. Your reel should be a standard moving bait reel between 6:2:1 and 8:1:1. With a faster reel, you can slow your speed more easily than speeding up. But with the Whopper Plopper lure, you only need to maintain a speed that allows the back propeller to turn and displace water.
