The Ugly Stik GX2 combo is a rod that’s still part of my arsenal after many years. It’s a versatile options for mostly new anglers, but seasoned anglers can get a lot out of it, too. The best part is that it’s affordable and great for the money. I own the 7′ Ultra Light Version (2-6LB) and have used it for multi-species and thrown a ton of lures and all work great, especially ultra light fishing.  It’s a fantastic freshwater rod and holds up to salt water species too. In the article, I’ll dive into the features and benefits of this rod and why it’s made such a splash in the fishing industry.
Durability And Construction

Ugly Stick is known for their strength. Seriously – you could bend this rod in half ( tip to handle ) and not break it. It has the signature graphite and fiberglass composite, giving the rod exceptional strength and good sensitivity. At least, that’s what they advertise, and I have to agree. You can detect smaller bites.
I’ve caught various species on the ultra-light  version of the rod including pan fish, large-mouth bass, and large trout, and it holds up well with all of them. The ultralight is also great for making long casts with spinners and Rapala minnows. You definitely feel the balance of toughness and lightweight. Although I’ve heard some minor complaints that the aforementioned balance begins to dissipate as you move up toward medium heavy.
 Ugly Stik GX2: Reel Quality

The reel on this combo is what you’d expect for the price. It’s a combination of mostly plastic and some metal components, but is versatile and dependable – a great starter reel for kid’s and new anglers. I haven’t seen major mechanical issues yet and I’ve fished it for years and several dozens of trips on the water. The reel offers smoothness and a good range of line capacities. Overall, the balance of sensitivity and strength is where the money is at in this rod. So don’t expect to make out like a bandit with an affordable, high end reel. But the Gx2 Reel pairs well with the rod and would benefit in a higher quality line like Suffix brand for smoother casting.
Final Thoughts

The Ugly Stik GX2 is well balanced, sensitive, and has signature toughness. If you’re new to fishing or want to make use of a rod you can beat on for years with no problems, it’s the rod for you. You’re also getting versatility. You can target almost all species from fresh water to salt, and the durability will match the power of the fish. The GX2 is good for finesse fishing sensitivity wise and seems to balance durability and sensitivity well.
You’ll have no problem fishing this rod all day with little fatigue due to the light weight design and EVA foam grips. I think you get more bang for your buck with this rod and I’d recommend it to any novice or seasoned angler looking for something reliable and competitively priced.

Ugly Stik products are well-rounded “generalists,” in my opinion. I own and use a few (rods & reels) for sure.
Yes sir. I own three models, one for surf fishing , one for ultra light, and a medium heavy. affordable work horses.
