The MegaBass X70 Review

Spread the love

Over the years I’ve played with several brands of jerk baits, some large and others small, roll action, flash, slow sinking, and slow rising. I can say now that I appreciate the detail and craftsmanship and what goes into the action, the dive, suspending action, etc. The ability of a lure company to fill a hole in the market also impresses me. That’s why I needed to try out the Megabass X70 Jerkbait. I had heard it “dominates the shallow range with a wide side-to-side action.” Admittedly, I hadn’t fished ultra shallow with a jerk bait before so this marketing caught my attention. I also love Megabass and was interested to see what they could do with a finesse-style jerk bait. I thought I’d try it with fall settling in here in California.

Megabass knocks it out of the park with their paint jobs and detail. 3D eyes and gill plate pop out with a color array of “baby trout” to “Mat Shad in their lineup.  The body paint is durable. I’ve already smashed it a few times against rocky shorelines and the paint and body construction both hold up. These fine details look fantastic in the water, and with the wide action (more on that below) and quick (almost tactical) darting movements and small size, larger fish won’t have time to study it, triggering an aggressive feed response. This lure is exactly what you’d see holding a fry in the palm of your hand. Whatever bait fish you have on your home water, this lure’s detail imitates it perfectly.

 Action

The X70 produces a lot of action for a small lure. It makes a wide side-to-side action with a tiny roll and then suspends, followed by a slow sink, which is a plus for getting deeper. The body is flat-sided so it emits a ton of flash and with the shallow running depth of 1-2 ft, I can see the lure as it rips along at the surface. It’s a perfect fall bass fishing bait. The small size also imitates the bait fish in many lakes and streams.

By that I mean that sometimes a standard-size jerk bait like the Vision 110 is a few inches too large based on the bait fish I see bass spitting up. The X70 is a perfect size imitation of the bait fish I’m used to seeing. On a straight retrieve, the x70 looks great with a side-to-side sway and I can imagine ( as the packaging indicates) that you could fish this lure in moving water like a Flat-Rap Rapala. It’s an unbeatable multi-species lure.

Hardware & Casting

Megabass is known for its feeble stock hooks. So I’d recommend an upgrade. The X70 comes outfitted with #10 and they bend out easily, say goodbye to your next 12 lb bucket mouth! The split rings are passable but I’d consider an upgrade to Owner hardware. The shallow running depth of this bait makes it lethal when fished over grass flats, boat docks, and other structures, which means an upgrade in hardware strength is imperative. I cast the X70 mostly on spinning tackle, and the main line to a 10lb leader. It casts well with its great counterbalance system, and I reached my targets most of the time. Despite being good for aggravating fish into biting, the wind was my enemy as it would bow my braided line and reduce the cast.

Megabass X70: Final Thoughts

The Megabass X70 Jerkbait is a lethal finesse lure effective when targeting bass, trout, crappie, pike, and other species based on its louder-than-life action and petite stature. The action packs a serious punch for its size giving off flash and sound. I especially like the slow sink action as it allows you to count down to your preferred depth. But I can’t stress enough the effectiveness of the finesse size of this lure. For fall, you’ll stand out among other bait fish with the flash, yet imitate the size of many bait fish accurately. It swims great on a straight retrieve making it deadly for aggressive brown trout feeding in moving water. I’d recommend the X70 to anyone looking to add to their finesse baits.
