Savage Gear 4D Pulse Tail Review

Spread the love

The Savage Gear 4D Pulse Tail Trout has been around for a while but I figured it deserved an in depth review for anyone diving into big swimbait fishing. Savage Gear developed this lure for the purpose of targeting large fish by giving it a unique versatility and action. It can be fished slow or fast, crawled, and retrieved quickly. It’s also a lure you can throw all winter for largemouth sitting on deep offshore structure. The body detail is scary good and it’s rivaled only by the life-like action. Overall, I’d recommend this swimbait to anyone targeting big largemouth bass in winter. But overall the pulse tail is lethal for most predatory fish.

Body Detail and Hooking Style

The color schemes on the pulse tail are immaculately life-like. They come in two versions of Rainbow Trout (Trout and Ghost Trout), Hitch, and Carp.  The two trout color schemes provide the option of a darker and lighter color fish. This is perfect for variations in water clarity and seasonal change. It’s a perfect imitation if your lake has one of these species or more. I like using it mostly in winter near boat launches where the trout are planted. The line thru rigging style may seem odd if you’re new to it but once you experience a giant on you’ll understand the benefit. Once the fish engages, the line pulls through sending the swim bait up the line to swing freely as the fish fights the treble hook only. It saves the body of the bait.

Savage Gear 4D Pulse Tail Versatility

I could write a separate article all about the versatility of this bait. You can feed your line through a specialized “internal Y system” that gives you the option of rigging your treble hook on top or belly. This is the time of year when I start slowing down and fishing deeper, and the pulse tail is a perfect wedge style bait that can be crawled along the bottom. So having that rigging option allows me to place the lure on hard structure and dying grass without hangups. It’s a great bait for fishing slow and fishing medium speed and it looks ultra-realistic. For the price, it’s one of the most realistic big swim baits. They’ve got a 6″, 8″, and 10″ style giving anglers a perfect range of bait fish sizes for giant bass.

4D Pulse Tail Action

As I mentioned, I like crawling the pulse tail along rocky bottoms. It creeps along and makes subtle hops as it flings off rocks and stones, and subtly thumps the wedge style tail. It’s a perfect big swim bait for winter. I’m also impressed with the pulse tail as a fast moving bait. The action is subtle and realistic on a slow crawl but it looks pretty awesome when burned back. Although it never puts out an obnoxious amount of action. It’s great for targeting less active fish, especially in colder water. But the same is true for the heat of summer when targeting lethargic fish.

Final Thoughts

The Savage Gear 4d Pulse Tail trout is a lure meant for giants. Whether your’e fishing for pike, largemouth, or musky, this bait rings the dinner bell. It has lifelike colors with an unmatched versatility, in my opinion – you can drag it along bottom, swim it fast, and dead stick it. The wedge tail keeps the bait moving subtlety while putting out a thumping action. It’s one of those lures that puts out a ton of small movements for the purpose of keeping low profile. For example, when you crawl this thing along rocks and it pops up, the pulse tail thumps just enough to set off a winter bass. The line-thru feature is awesome because I can fish it around any cover I want while keeping the treble hook clear.
